Affordable Housing for All in Sustainable Humane Habitats
Providing affordable housing to all in our towns, cities and metropolises is a critical component of urban development strategy to evolve sustainable humane habitats.
It was estimated in 2005 that there were 1 billion people who were homeless in the world. In European Union there were 3,000,000 people were homeless as per UNHABITAT estimate in 2004. In US it was estimated that there were 671,888 people were homeless while in Japan the figure was 2,00,000 to 4,00,000.
The situation in developing countries is much worse. Like in Mumbai 58% of its population is living in slum communities and dilapidated old housing areas in sub-human conditions. While it was estimated that there were 1 billion people living in slum community in the world, this figure may double to 2 billion by 2030 if we fail in our responsibility to provide affordable housing to all.
National and State Policies
We need to review the existing development policies at international, national and state or province level that has resulted in homelessness and mushrooming of slum communities in absence of affordable housing in our cities. We would like to discuss the change that is required in our policies and programmes to enable the urban poor to have affordable homes.
Affordable Housing Strategies & Programmes
We are aware that world over architects, planners and policy makers have been experimenting along with the government and non-government organizations to plan, design and develop affordable housing programmes. We would like to know about such experimental and successful strategies and programmes from different countries and cities.
Affordable Housing Design
Housing sector provides unique opportunities to architects, engineers and planners to design appropriate, affordable and sustainable housing using traditional or contemporary approaches. It would be interesting to share these projects and works in the field of housing.
Sustainable Communities
Affordable housing is the key to shaping of sustainable communities. Housing is an integral part of community development programmes. Along with supporting social, educational, health care and cultural institutions, affordable housing enables development of sustainable humane habitats.
Evolving Sustainable Humane Habitats
The case studies of traditional, modern and post-modern habitats including conservation, revitalization, redevelopment and development of affordable housing and new sustainable communities with mix land use, and innovative policies and programmes in evolving sustainable humane habitats.
